Slow speeds only when accessed as Remote user Share

I am not sure if the title explains the problem exactly or not but here it is in detail:

When I access WD My Cloud Public Shares as local network drive while on my home network I get good speeds (around 10MBps with my 10/100 router) and I can play movies from the NAS on my laptop.

However, when I login to WD2Go.com using my remote user credentails and then map my Public Share using ‘Open in Explorer’ button. I can navigate to the files and folder in the Public share quite fast but when I try to play movies, they don’t start. Even copying to / from NAS to my HDD is quite slow (<1MBps) while I am on the same home network.

At the same time, if I access those movies using local n/w path \WDMYCLOUD\Public, it works well.

I tried turning off Mcafee firewall.

Currenly my WD Cloud is configured with static IP (192.168.1.235),

Reserved this IP address for WD My Cloud mac in router’s LAN setup

I have also enabled UPnP on my router.

Setup Port Forwarding for port 80 & 443

and kept Remote Access Configuration (under Cloud Access in WD UI > Settings > General) to Auto.

Am I missing something here?

I have observed that I am able to stream these movies through WD Cloud Apps on my iPhone and Tablet whether I am on my home network or other network. But only problem is for accessing movies on my Windows laptops (Win 7 or Win 8.1 both).

what is your Internet upload speed? measured with somthing like speedtest.net.

the drive mapping with wd2go.com does not performa as well or as reliably as the mycloud app. is there a reason you need to do this as you way playing with the mycloud app works.

also when opening from a mapped drive it is probably copying the entire file before starting

I have seen my internet upload speed varying between 10Mbps to 20 Mbps. But it usually never goes below 10Mbps which means at least I should be able to get 1MBps speed to copy files or should be able to stream 720p movies (around 700mb - 1.2Gb size)

I tried opening a 700mb movie file using the WD My Cloud Windows desktop app from my work place which has a 7-8Mbps wifi (I checked dowload speed with Speedtest) but it too wasn’t able to open/play the video.

So far, what I have observed is whenever I try to play videos thourgh Remote User Mapped Drive (\wdmycloud.device18####5.wd2go.com@SSL\DavWWWRoot) in windows explorer, it copies the file to laptop’s harddrive and then plays the video in media player. The time to start video playback is time to actually copy the entire file to my hard drive in the backgroud. (this time is usually 2min/GB in my home network and 3mins/100MB in any other high-speed network.

However, when I open these videos from mapped network drive using local IP (\192.168.1.235\Public\Videos) from within my network, the video starts playing instantly and I believe it is never copied to my hard drive.

Is this by design or due to any network config issues?

what are you using to play the video locally? remotely?

if you are using DLNA locally the mycloud will stream it to the player.

Sorry for the delayed reply… and a Happy New Year!

I am using Windows Media Player / VLS Player for Windows to play videos on Windows 8.1 / Windows 7 Pro laptops locally as well as remotely.

I’ve recenly ordered a new Cisco Valet Plus M20 wireless router with Gigabit ethernet ports. Probably will get time today in install it. I will update my findings after replacing my wireless router.

Thanks for all your help!
