Sound coming/going

Over the past couple of days, I’ve had a problem with the sound going away, then coming back (after pause/restart), then going away again, and so on.  I use the WDTV exclusively for watching Netflix and streaming via PlayOn, and the sound issue has occurred with both.  Thinking maybe an hdmi issue, I tried different cables, same problem.  So I was going to switch to component, but when I go in an change the audio/video to component and disconnect the hdmi cable, I get nothing.  No picture.  No sound.  Nothing.  If I have hdmi AND component connected, I get both.  Unplug hdmi.  Nothing.  I did a factory reset and started over.  Same thing. 

I’m just an old granny so please don’t get too technical, but if anyone could clue me in as to what I’m wrong here, I’d really appreciate it.  Please and thank you.

Welcome to the torums.

If you want you can use the audio out from the composite cable and the video from the HDMI – since you were going to try component this might be the ultimate answer for you.

So leave HDMI cable plugged in, leave component cable plugged it, set video for HDMI, and set audio for component.  Am I following you?  I’ll give that a try.  Still odd (to me) that I can’t get anything with component alone.  I’ll let you know show the combo works out.  Thanks.

Well, except that I meant composite (for the red/white stereo plugs) you have it.

There’s no separate “sound out that isn’t HDMI” but there is a “stereo” sound (which is what you want).  (There’s also audio out but not through HDMI for optical cable only).
