Suggestion for Backup (safepoint) disk with Mycloud

Hey,

U have 4TB My cloud disk and I want to put another HD for safety reasons. Which one do you recommend?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Are you trying to backup your existing my cloud to a different drive? If yes, you can get another my cloud.

Hey,

Thank you for answer.

Yes I want to back up my exsisting my cloud But why another mycloud and not a normal drive?

Thank tou.

Because your original question is very vague…?

Do you want to connect the HDD to the mycloud’s USB port, and use the built-in Safepoint/backup utility?
Do you want to connect the HDD to your computer and use a backup utility? And, if so, what backup features are you looking for?
Do you want to back up to another NAS on your local network?
Do you want to back up to a remote location?

cpt_paranoia said it best. We are all users just like you, and we all have had successes and failures with attached drives to the USB 3 port of the My Cloud. The “How, What, When, Where” of what you are trying to achieve is most important in getting the best answer we can provide.

I, personally, have one My Cloud backed up/safepoint to another My Cloud. The second My Cloud is only accessible by me.

Thank you for your answers.

I will make it more clear.

I have a My Cloud and I want to use the built-in Safepoint/backup utility. Which drive is the best for this situation? Is another My Cloud better than a normal HDD drive in this situation?

For me it is another My Cloud as it seems to always stay recognized by my first My Cloud using Safepoints. I would also recommend a Static IP from the router ( within the DHCP IP pool of the router ) and leave the My Clouds as DHCP.

You can search the forum for USB attached drives and see the issues and work-arounds.

When I purchased a 3TB MyCloud I also purchased a 4 TB MyBook which connects to the USB3 port on the MyCloud

Besides have adequate storage for 3TB it can also be used for “extra” storage. I have the MyBook always connected so it’s always available for all the devices in my home.

Regards,
Pete

So, does your 4TB MyBook take backup of your MyCloud?

I’m not clear about your meaning “take backup”
Here’s what I have:

3TB My Cloud configured to make daily Safepoints at 3am
4TB My Book always connected to My Cloud

Safepoint creation is configured on My Cloud using My Book as repository for Safepoints.

Below copied from the help available from dashboard…
WD My Cloud lets you create a complete backup or snapshot of your device, called a safepoint, and save it to an external location on your home network—on another NAS drive, an available share, or USB drive.Safepoints can be created on a schedule you define. They include a record of users, data, and shares on your device; any backups created using WD SmartWare™/Apple Time Machine®, or Windows® 8/Windows 7/Vista®; and any associated device configuration details. Creating a safepoint ensures that you can easily recover your data from a specific point in time to a new, compatible device in the unlikely event that your WD My Cloud fails.
