Supported 7.1 Formats on Live Hub

I just bought a 7.1 receiver and I’m looking for some guidance about what formats my WDTV Live Hub can support.  The receiver is a Pioneer VSX-921-K and it is connected to the Live Hub using HDMI.

I’ve searched the forum already, and I know it can play TrueHD and PCM on Blue-Ray Rips.  But I’m wondering about more compact file formats like MKV.

Can the Live Hub play TrueHD in MKV files?  What about DTS-HD/DTS-MA in MKV files?

If I’m looking at a bunch of MKV files that I already have, is there an easy way to tell which files have 7.1 sound and will play on my Live Hub?

True HD in MKV is passed through.

DTS HD and DTS HD MA passes only the DTS 5.1 core.

Shouldn’t “pass-through” leave the signal untouched by the Hub? If the Live Hub is suppressing any signals then it really isn’t pass-through, now is it?

I didn’t say it was.  I said it passes only the 5.1 core.   It’s not pass-through of the original audio bitstream.

I found a huge list of all the movies available with 7.1 audio:

It’s really disappointing to see how few movies have been release with Dolby TrueHD or Linear PCM. DTS-HD/MA is really dominating.

Why can’t WD pass through DTS-HD/MA? I thought licenses were only needed for decoding, not pass-through?

I didn’t say you did. The Hub setting calls it pass-through, giving the obviously mistaken impression that it is exactly that.

Yeah, good point.

I guess it’s a little wordy to say “Digital Passthrough via HDMI Only (Except for DTS-HD and unknown others.)”  :smileyvery-happy:

Still, it would be nice if they documented it somewhere instead of mistakenly leading people to believe it is just a pass-through.
