Synology, subtitles, Media Server and Network Share

Hello,

I have bought a WDTV Play today, and I am trying to use it with my Synology DS112j station.

The videos play quite fine. However, I cannot manage to see the subtitles.

Looking in this forums, or on other forums on internet, I see many people pretending that playing the subtitles will not work via the Media Server. However, they will play fine via Network Share.

The problem is, I am such a dummy that I don’t even know whether I am playing my videos via a Media Server or via a Network Share. How do I know? And how can I change this?

Currently, my configuration is the following:

  • my videos are stored on my Synology DS112j station. There are many videos in various formats (avi, mpeg, mkv, etc).

  • The DS112j station is connected to my router via a LAN cable.

  • WDTV Play is connected to the same router via another LAN cable, and to the TV via an HDMI cable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

You are playing via a media server. I know this because the WD Play does not do network shares.

If your DLNA server does not show external subs you might try muxing them into mkv/mp4 files to see if it makes a difference.

Hello,

Many thanks to both of you for your answers. Muxing to an mkv file seems to be the best way indeed.

Cheers!

And in case of having a NAS such as WD My Book Live connected to the network by ethernet and also connected to the WDTV Play by USB will the WDTV Play read it as a media server os as a local connected drive?

You see, I need subtitles and also need the capacity to reach the disk on the network. If I cant get both then the WDTV is of no use to me… It makes no sense at all to have a wifi (or ethernet) connected player if you have always to connect by usb  to the hard drive to upload files…

I am on the mood to go to the store, spend another 100 buck and by a network enabled HD but only if I know it works…

You can’t connect a mybook live to the player via USB.
