Will reading from a windows network share be ever implemented with a firmware update ? DLNA and UPnP servers doesn’t stream the external subtitle over the network and it really **bleep** to have to copy everything to a pendrive just for the subtitles.
TV Play is a “reduced-feature” WD player. You are discovering what got left out of this device for the price you paid for it. The full-featured WD player is what you need.
Muxing the external subtitles inside the container (MKV,MP4,AVI) will work with DLNA streamed files.
(see my comments and info below. this is for the SMP but will apply to the PLAY as well)
Depends on the DLNA server used, doesn’t it? So far I’ve only seen those that handle external SRT subs.
Or, depending on what subtitles you are using, just burn them into a mkv, then you don’t have to worry about them.
Thanks JoeySmyth, I was a bit aware that muxing files on an mkv container with mkvmerge would allow me to have the subtitles, but thing was to not having to do any additional process to just have subtitles. In my opinion, this is a really bad flaw that needs to be addressed by WD, since having subtitles via network is absolutely necessary to a ton of people (non-english people mostly and even to english people to see foreing movies). I fail to see why this is a “premium” feature while including wireless connectivity, I just see this as a motive to start looking for an alternative firmware that implements this little bit of functionality.
I’d say that WD reconsiders the position they took on this one, if “premium” is the motive this is not implemented.

That’s what I meant with depending on the server, some can’t handle subs in MKV either.
