Hi…I got a My Book World edition with white light. I have 2 questions: 1). I followed all the supplied instructions to configure with Time Machine and it worked. But once a day, TM does not seem to see the drive calling a backup error. Specifically the error is : "Failed to perform backup because TM can’t connect to the drive. Go in TM preferences, select the drive and enter user name and password. ". Also, when I get this message, if I just hit backup now, it works fine and performs the backup. Any idea on why TM randomly doesn’t see the drive? The drive is connected with DHCP 2). It is my first experien e with an NAS drive and I find backup and access time pretty slow. A 800 GB backup take at least 12 hours to perform. Is it normal? Thanks very much for your help.
did you get the information you needed for this?
Have same problem, occationally. Initial backup sensationally slow, but works fine most of the time after that. But some time gets an error “NIC 1 link down” - and then no services are available for it. I have tried to turn of “remote access” and it looks like it helps, but I am testing now to se if it was just accidental.
Hoping someone can help me out with this.
Just got and installed my MBWE 1TB NAS. Trying to set it up with Time Machine TM. Mac OS 10.6.5
If I reboot the MBW it will find and show two shares in Finder. MyBookWorld & MyBookWorld-Backups.
TIme machine will do one scheduled back up (hourly) during which time it will mount a Time Machine Backup disk to the desktop while it is working.
After that the MyBookWorld-Backups share disappears and TM will not be able to make the next back up.
I have set up the drive with static IP in the web based admin page and also reserved the IP for it in my router.
Can anyone see what I’m doing wrong and why I keep losing the share?
I’ve been given RMA’s from WD and the place I bought it but I have faith that I can resolve this an it’ll work find thereafter.
Thanks
Unfortunately, I haven’t figure that out. There is this unofficial firmware that is appearing here (1.02.05). I’m really hesitating to install it because it doesn’t come from official channels. But hey… strangely, on the WD downloads site, latest version available for download is 1.01.16. Mine came with 1.01.18 ??? I’m starting to think that I should have bought a Time Capsule.
you may be right about the Time Capsule. I’m still working on a fix. I’ll post any results.
I wish that I can help you. I’m not sure if it’s gonna fix it but I installed the unofficial 1.02.05 firmware. So far, it doesn’t seem to have messed anything up. Also, I did not have any disconnect with in the last 24 hours. Will report back in a couple of days.
where did you find 1.02.05?
I had a long chat with Apple this weekend with respect to Time Machine on this NAS.
They seem to think there is a problem with WD’s software in that it should not dismount the “time machine backup” volume after the first backup. This causes the lose of the Share: MyBookWorld-Backup and the inability for TM to complete the next one. Trying to download and install 1.02.05 now.
Thanks
Are both shares stable for you now?
So far so good. Will wait a few more days to conclude it fixed the issue. I will report back.
question for you: Are you able to access your drive via a browser at myworldbook.local?
I am not, only via the direct IP address.
It’s going back to where I bought it on Fri unless I discover something soon. I really don’t know if I want to try another one or a different product altogether.
Thanks
Yes I am able to access via the browser at mybookworld.local. I always been able to connect like that. I use Bonjour under the Bookmark tab of Safari. When selecting that, it shows the above address. I’m not sure I can be more help only that the drive is connected with afp.
As of today, the connection is still stable and it haven’t miss a backup with TM since I upgraded to 1.02.05 (Saturday). I’m crossing fingers and will wait until the end of the week to conclude.
I was on the fence to decide between the latest AEBS with this NAS drive or the latest Time Capsule. I went the AEBS and this NAS as I saved 200$ for the total but I’m thinking that the level of reliability is very questionable and I’m not sure at all I have made the right choice. To be exact, I’m starting to regret it. To add on this, it obviously appears that the level of service from WD on their products is very poor. …just considering the official firmware being today 1.01.16 and I got my drive with 1.01.18. And where the hell this .18 is on their site and where the hell this 1.02.05 comes from? Those drives firmwares haven’t been officially updated for at least a year and they are still plagued with, I would say, quite major bugs…
Sorry for the vent…
ya, I regret it too but as you say there was a cost savings.
This may be a mistake but I’m going to return this MBW for a MB Live on Fri and see if that helps
If I have time I’ll call WD and ask if the software is the same etc. if so I’ll just get a refund and forget it for now.
So…as a little more than a week that I installed that 1.02.05, the connection is rock solid with no disconnection since then. I encourage everyone who has issues to install it.
Nope finally, it started to bug again. Here is exactly what it does (see picture). Notice that the error message comes with a missed backup. But looking at the upper right TM icon, TM was able to perform the next backups.
The My Book World edition is definitely the worst product I have bought since I switched from PC to Mac. First and last external solution from WD.
