I am trying to use WDMyCloud as an extra Time Machine backup location. One going to Preferences Time Machine WDMyCloud drive is snot shown so cannot connect? Latest version Safari Late 205 i5 with 16GB memory. WDMyCloud is recognised by the computer and is backing up files as I type this. So nothing appears to be wrong with WDMyCloud 4TB device or my iMac.
Hi, what OS version are you running in the Mac?
Sierra 10.12.1
Are you able to connect to manually connect to the drive and transfer information to it?
Apologies for the delayed reply, other priorities keep me away. The only method of connecting is via the ethernet cable and at last all is working as it should as a WD Mycloud back up using WD Sync. I have rebooted, gone back to factory default (took a while) and I think everything is set correctly. BUT Time Machine when I try to set up for this drive is just not seeing it.
just a hunch, have you enabled timemachine on wdmycloud? wdmycloud settings, Mac Backups option (last item on page).
Yes thanks.
That, to me, points very firmly to a problem with your Mac, or your WiFi connectivity.
The MyCloud doesn’t care how it is connected. If it works over a working wired connection, it will work over a working wireess connection.
Thanks Steve all now sorted with the excellent assistance from Paul at WDMyCloud. TimeMachineBackup is working 100%, all music and images backup when ever I add and it is good to sit out while shopping and listen to music on WDMyCloud via my mobile phone and ear buds LOL Again many thanks, but all now sorted.

I’m certainly no WD apologist, but Time Machine has a poor reputation for working with non-Apple hardware. Apple are also pretty keen on deliberately changing their proprietary APIs to prevent third party devices working.
Is the experience also souring your view of future Apple purchases?
Then why not dump using Apple’s Time Machine and use a third party backup program? Apple products tend to work best only with other Apple products. There are common complaints of Time Machine issues with third party NAS units like the My Cloud.
There are some free backup programs for the Mac, EaseUS Todo Backup Free (http://www.easeus.com/) is one such free basic backup program for both Windows and Macintosh.
I thought it wasn’t working via WiFi with your MyCloud?
Big whoop.
I’ve restored entire operating systems with Macrium Reflect on a number of occasions.
It’s what backup programs do.
I certainly would not dump Time Machine. I have been using it successfully since December 2009 and it has never failed to support me. I had a hard drive go on my Dec 2009 iMac i7, thankfully Time Machine saved the day. Apple did a recall on the hard drive model (seagate I think) and even though over 3 years old replaced the drive. Again Time Machine was put to good use. I have Parallels Desktop and Windows 10 Pro running which I need for MS ACCESS and my amateur radio hobby and Windows 8.1, pre Windows 10 screwed and I found it easier to use Time Machine to get back to Windows 7 which had been fault free, Including the 4TB WDMyCloud drive I have 3 x time Machine backups running - Yes belt, braces and a bit of string but everything I have I want to keep. I moved from the old i7 to a new i5 5K and found the easiest and quickest way (USB3 drive pre-WDMyCloud) was just to restore everything my Time Machine to the new iMac, updated/changed registration then cleared the old i7 - done.
Time Machine - I would not part with it, even though I also have SuperDuper.
Looks like we’ve upset Steve by suggesting Time Machine may be less than perfect.
