Struggling to get my cloud to work with time machine via my home network. I have been able to mount the drive on my Mac desktop. And can read write to folders. As I have stored my iTunes folder on there. But can’t get the drive to appear as an option in time machine. Is this possible.
If you haven’t already done so you may want to reach through the My Cloud User Manual (http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/?id=439&type=25), in particular Chapter 4 Backing Up and Retrieving Files, Using Apple Time Machine which explains how to setup Apple Time Machine to backup to the My Cloud.
If you do a forum search you’ll see that some others are having trouble both with El Capitan and with Time Machine. With some possible workarounds to both issues.
Actually its very easy.
Use Timemachine settings, add the share WD has already prepared and then a new full backup will start. Use Gigabit Ethernet, as it will take a long time otherwise.
When the backup is finished, everything will be unmounted automatically. Slick!
I’ve managed to mount the time machine drive on desktop as guest. But can’t get it to show in time machine. Does it have to connected via Ethernet directly as currently accessing through wifi network?
As long as the My Cloud is connected to the same local network that the Mac computer is connected too (wired or wirelessly) the Mac should be able to access the My Cloud.
Guest? Mount it as admin user (you!) and give it write access rights in WD dashboard.
Wifi not recommended. Connect both computer/mycloud to router with ethernet cables.
In Timemachine settings, add disk, move to /Volumes/Timemachine or whatever is the name.
