Time Machine not working properly on My Cloud OS 5

Recently upgraded my My Cloud Mirror Gen 2 to OS 5. From OS 5 I seem to be having issues making Time Machine backups to the NAS.

  • When making a new Time Machine backup iteration it tries to back up far more than what is on the Macbook’s storage (e.g. tries to create a backup of >300GB while there is only ~250GB on my Macbook. Odd detail: It also did not mention the total size of the backup it was trying to make (e.g. it said 295GB completed whereas before it said 150GB of 250GB completed - the information in bold seems to be missing now).
  • In Finder the My Cloud shows up, I can also access the shares but not the Time Machine share. It throws me an error (translated): “Action could not be completed, because the original file from ‘TimeMachine’ cannot be found.” Before the upgrade it could always access it and see the files in it.

Other info:

  • Indexing of My Cloud has been completed.
  • v5.08.115
  • MacBook Air M1, Big Sur 11.1

Any tips/thoughts what to do?

An older device (MBP 2014 on Big Sur) that had Time Machine backups set up to the WDMC on OS 3 seems to still work under OS 5. That is: I see the backups were completed with recent date signatures. Also I can ‘active TM’ and go back to previous versions.

I am starting to think that getting this error message (translated) might be intended behavior by OS 5.

“Action could not be completed, because the original file from TimeMachine cannot be found.”

I get a similar message when trying to access a folder from an account that does not have the appropriate elevation rights. So maybe this is due to security? What is interesting though is that Time Machine is the standard share/folder which is a ‘public’ folder and other public shares can be accessed without issues. Would be great if someone is able to confirm this.

Still leaves open the quirky behavior with the infinite backup size. After migrating to OS 5 I seem to be unable to complete a newer backup (one that is created under OS 5) from my MBA M1 on Big Sur 11.1. I have a MBP intel on Big Sur 11.0.1 which was able to complete a TM backup after the migration to OS5.

when I did one test on a Beta Big Sur with a M1 late 2020 Mac Min the first original backup did work but not any additional ones .

Deleted files and tried again same result – even with latest Big Sur beta

Have not tested more as it may be a M1 or Big Sur problem or the Snapshots
SMB is set to 3 ( read that was needed --)

this may not be all a OS5 problem - Big Sur likes APFS formatted backup drives but does still support the old format

Th New silicon mac M1 have to use Big Sur 11.0.1 so I can not test with Catalina -

I use Acronis software for backups and store those files on my WD NAS for Windows and Mac and only do time machine backups from mac’s to local disk drives via Thunderbolt
