Time Machine wireless backups fail on early 2009 iMac

Recently installed an 8tb MyCloud and set the TimeMachine partition to 2 1/2tb to back up my MacBookPro and home iMac. started with the iMac running Yosemite. Back up failed. Went to El Capitan, same. (Can’t go any newer on the OS, I’m afraid). I’ve tried mounting the MyCloud TimeMachineBackup volume as registered user, guest and by using the IP address. No joy yet.

The MBP worked first time on El Capitan and still works now on Sierra.

Has anyone resolved a similar issue or have any suggestions?

I did and the world-class support team has since closed the case without any resolution. they might want to re-think that title
