Trying to get Windows 7 to connect to WDTVLive

Hi there,

I’m having a problem and I was wondering if you could help me.

I’ve got a WDTV Live box that I bought last month.  Recently I have been using it to stream from a Windows XP machine and I have had no problem connecting to shared folders on it and being able to stream the video files over to my Media streamer box.  It seems fairly easy to do this in Windows XP but since last week I have now replaced that machine with a Windows 7 machine instead.  I’m using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit on this new machine but I’m having a problem now sharing the folders to the WDTVLive box.

One of the problems that I’m having seems to be that when I’m trying to connect to Windows shares I get that password thing and can’t get past it.  I know I’ve had problems before but I can’t even seem to get the Windows shares to show up now since I got Windows 7.  The network configurations in Windows 7 seem a lot more complicated now.  I have tried disabling the password option that somebody was mentioning before and I also, in the WDTVLive, cleared my login password but I still can’t see the folders.

Normally now in Windows 7 to share a folder on a home network I would go to right click on the folder I want to share, choose share with and then choose Homegroup (Read) to share the folder.  I have managed to have 2 Windows 7 machines connected before and found that by sharing things in the Homegroup it was easy.  All I had to do was put a matching passcode into the other machine so it would allow them both to connect to each other.  It was much easier like I said in Windows XP but now in Windows 7 it’s different.  I’m not sure really exactly how to go about connecting a shared folder to the WDTVLive, can I not just share a folder to the homegroup and then the WDTVLive will pick it up on the home network?

Or are things a lot more complicated?

I’m not sure what to do, this is why I’m posting here really to get some more advice.  Sorry if this has been discussed before, I’m not sure what’s already been said.  It is the first time I’ve tried to connect Windows 7 to the WDTVLive so I’m quite new to it.  If I can get it working then I’ll be fine then.  I have learned a bit already about how the Media Streamer works.  All I need really is to just simply be able to see the Windows Shares and then I can stream stuff from my PC to my TV easily.

BTW I’m using a good brand new Netgear router that I got recently, it’s very nice and it seems to work well and my network seems to be set up good already, like I said it was working fine with Windows XP but this switch has made me get confused about how to go about setting it up correctly.

I’ve managed to get it past the log in bit now and I can view the “Users” folder but that’s about it.

There doesn’t seem to be a way of getting the shared folders on this machine to share to the WDTVLive.  I’ve just been messing around with it again just now but I can’t figure it out.

Somebody please help me?

With shares for the WD you have to chose read and write not just read.

You setup your homegroup selct your shares and share them by read and write (wd has to write a wd folder to the share to speed up future scans).

Log/password is of course the name you used to log into the pc and the password.

Actually you don’t. My Win7 shares are read-only (I don’t use the media library though).

You can do that but media library wotn work as mentioned.

No info or fancy movie sheets extra.
