Updating built-in apps independent of firmware & other questions

Is it possible to update the buil-in apps such as CTorrent & Twonky w/o updating the firmware?

I just purchased the WDMBWE from Best Buy for $100 on clearance (version 1 white light), thought it was a good deal for a NAS based storage solution and for streaming to my 4 PS3’s in the house.

Thank God for these forums… I’m currently running the pseudo-supported/pseuco-official firmware 1.01.18 so I DID NOT upgrade to 1.02.4. After seeing all the stories of bricked devices I think you could build a house with them!

After getting everything all setup I am please with the setup.

  • Currently running the device using a staic IP with UPnP turned on the router.
  • I can see all the sahres in the Public folder and any new shares I create.
  • Twonky is working fine for streaming all my contect both wired & wirelessly to my PS3’s (cannot play .MKV files since that is an unsupported file type for Sony).

I do have a few questions for the crowd that hopefully someone can answer as searching previous forum threads hasn’t provided much more detail.

  1. Is it possible to have Twonky see anything above the Public folder share? Currently I can only see shared files in folders within the Public folder. I’d like to simplify things and share folders right off the root.
  2. Is it possible to update Twonky to the newer versions available from the Twonky site directly?
  3. Is this fix HERE still supported for stopping MioNet from autostarting at reboot and is this recommended to implement to improve performance of the device overall?
  4. Is it possible to update the CTorrent client at all or even replace it with a more robust torrent app? I’ve heard of a max of 3 active torrents…

Thanks for any & all help provided. Hopefully I can be of as much help as some others on here have been.

All I hear is crickets out there…

Hi there

I think I can answer some of your questions but I might be a bit short on detail as I not at home at the moment so can’t look on my MBWEII to verify things.

It is possible to install an alternative version of Twonky - someone else on here has successfully done it and I am currently debugging my attempt at doing it. You will, however, have to purchase a license as you can’t use the built in WD corporate license to upgrade.

Twonky can look at other paths - I have done this witn mine. You have to make an alteration in the Twonky configuration file. I can’t remember the exact path but it is easy to find and fairly obvious which entry to change when you see it.

The Mionet fix still works. The main advantage for me is that it enables the machine to go into standby mode after a quiet period.

Hope that gives you some encouragement to have a go. Sorry for the vagueness.

Tony

I will be upgrading my version of Twonky this evening, You can upgrade from 5.x to 6.x but will need a license or the upgrade will be in a 30 day trial mode.

I’ve successfully upgrade the cTorrent client and currently using Transmission which is very speedy and can manage multiple torrents w/o issues.

The Mionet has also resolved the initial of issue of the drive being unavailable and/or not coming out of stand-by mode. 72+ hours without the need for a reboot or reset and available thru my PS3’s and networked laptops of which all are a combination of wired & wireless.
