I have a WD My book world edition II (white light) 2Tb, and I wanted to upgrade HD’s with 2x2Tb WD Caviar Green (WD20EAR). However, when I replace HDs (brand new), the box did not boot up and WD Discovery can not detect HDs. When I use one old and one new HD in the box, box boots up, In the configration menu old hd 1TB new one 2Tb shows and as usual raid 1 capacity is 1Tb. When I put second new HD in the box, the box boots up, Disk manager shows each HDs as 2TB as normal. However, Raid 1 capacity still 1 Tb with 2x2Tb HDs. Any solution to increase Raid 1 capacity? When I configure the box raid 0 or JBOD capacity stucks on 2TB not 4TB. Thanks
I dont thing this is going to work.
Since this unit uses RAID the drives are configure for that. You may be lucky and get it to work if you insert one drive first let the RIAD rebuild and then the second one.
It may not work since it will be looking at the 1TB drives that were originally configured for.
If I let old hd rebults the new hd, new hds works but capacity of hds are on raid 1 is 1TB and raid 0 is 2TB, so 2TB hd works like 1 TB HD. In WD’s disc manager menu each new HD looks 1.8 TB which is normal, however in Volume/raid menu each new hd looks 938mb which is not normal. In this forum, someone had done it and got 4TB on raid 0, but he did not explain his solution.
Finally I did it, Ok. You have 2x2TB HDs and raid 1 shows as 1 TB because of mirrored from 2x1TB HDs.
- Connect one of 2TB HD computer’s sata port
2. Boot from Slax live cd, then from terminal panel run cfdisk /dev/sda
-
Delete largest partition (sd4) and create new one as default then change to “Type” as FD
-
Write to partition table,
-
Quit
-
Do same for 2nd HD.
-
Install 2 HDs in to the box, reset
-
Goto configuration menu re-raid
So you may use any size of HD with WD mybook world edition II (white light)
That is awesome I ll try that as soon as I can buy two new drives.
Thank you for sharing.
Is this done through Linux? Can you provide a little more detail as I am not sure how you have done it,
Many Thanks
Glyn
I have the chance to get the NAS case without the old HDDs.
It would be very helpful to know, if you used the “putting on of the new HDs into the case and rebuild RAID” and then “partitioing it on linux” version of your plan finally, or if it just works with partitioning on a linux system and putting the two drives back in the case to get it started.
