Hi there.
I just bought one of these yesterday and I think there may be something wrong with my box but before I take it back I just wanted to make sure.
About 12 hours I plugged a 2.5" HDD into the WD Hub and set it to sync. It said it was compiling the media. There was around 300 GB of info on the disc (music, tv shows & some movies).
I started the process when I left for work this morning and to my amazement 12 hours later it is still syncing. I checked how much the device had synced and it was roughly half. It’s only done 150 GB in 12 hours. With my old Techgear box this would be done very quickly.
This is not normal is it? Perhaps I’m doing someting wrong but I think I may have a dud.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Dean
When you plug a usb drive or flash drive on the Hub it will ask you if you would like to sync, you can just select no and the sync will not take place, there’s an option on the system settings that disable the sync in case you don’t want to sync data in the future.-
Thanks for the reply ricardo.
I want it to sync though, that was the whole idea to getting this device.
So, is the time it’s taking normal then?
Cheers,
Dean
I prefer to do it normal, because I can copy only the movies and music I really want to have on the Hub and copying files takes less than Syncing
Ok, thanks Ricardo - makes sense.
I gather copying the file will be a whole lot faster.
Oh, dear - I think I should have found this forum before I bought this device.
I have been reading topics on what I’m experiencing and these ultra slow transfer speeds I’m getting are totally normal !! There is no way around this at all it seems.
The product seems pretty good - menus & functionality etc but this transfer speed is totally unacceptable for me anyway. I never picked this up in the glowing reviews I read either. Total deal breaker.
I will still give it a go over the next week but I don’t think I’ll last too long with this as it is now unless there is some kind of fix.
Does this not seem like a fatal flaw to you guys?
Edit: I also think I have made a mistake in trying to format this thing via the menu system - been going 4 hours now.
Sorry for all the questions but I stopped the format after 4 hours which I thought was enough and now it’s saying the disc is on 587 GB.
I guess I will just have to format it again but I have read that someone let it go for 50 hrs and it still hadn’t finished formatting.
Is there a quick way of just resoring this thing?
Cheers,
Dean
Well it seemed to have reformatted itself and is back to its normal capacity.
I have tunrned off sync.
As a last ditch effort to resore some faith in this product I am just going to try and use it to play files from an external HDD.
Well, that’s the end of that for me.
This thing is way way way way too slow to trasfer files. I know it’s just going to frustrate the **bleep** out of me.
It’s really not that great at playing files from external HDD’s either compared to other players I’ve used.
She’s all packed up in her box and I’ll put an advert in the local classifieds tomorrow at half price to quickly get rid of it.
Thanks for the help and I hope the next incarnation of this box has some fundamental transfer issues resolved.
I’m simply amazed they let this go to market the way it is.
Frustrating piece of tech.
Cheers,
Dean
Dean, although the Live Hub wasn’t for you, I’m responding in case others are in your situation. I’d say your sync transfer speeds were abnormal. I’ve done 250-gig transfers in about four or five hours. Not great, but doable. My Live Hub maxes out at about 11.5Mbps to 13.5Mbps, depending on what mood it’s in. Before large syncs like this, Media Library should definitely be OFF. If it isn’t it will easily cut the transfer speed in half, or less. It’s easy enough to turn it back on after the sync.
I didn’t understand ricardodegracia’s comment about copying. AFAIK, the only way to copy is over the local network, and that truly takes forever.
Hello Hawkster.
I’m not sure what was going on but even 4-5 hours for a 300GB sync is totally unacceptable.
How long would it take to copy 300 GB of data - 4-5 days !! I mean what’s going on here - this is crazy stuff. Even the most hard core fans of this unit must admit this is not market ready in this respect.
WD really needs to do a lot of work to get this product up to a state where it’s useable because at the moment it seems anything but … for me anyway ! It’s an unforgivable flaw, especially from a company like WD.
I ended up getting a 160GB Apple TV and also one of the new Apple TV’s. Sure, I’m limited by what this can play but the user experience is night and day compared to the WD unit. You can hack the ATV to bring it new functionality but Handbrake has been serving me well. It’s just so polished.
I’ve converted my music from FLAC to Apple Lossless and have it running into an external DAC into my amp and it sounds great but the GUI is simply amazing. I don’t expect the WD to be as good as the ATV but it’s not even close as far as user experience goes. The ATV is simply a joy to use.
You can sync massive amounts of data extremely quickly as well.
IMO opinion, unless they fix some issues it borders on unusable, but it’s different strokes for different folks I guess.
