Videos wont play from cloud

just bought a recertified and attached to my superhub which is 200mbps

i have uploaded all my films to the the cloud but when trying to play from there, it goes incredibly slow.

have i done something wrong?

How is your NAS connected to your LAN?..

How are you playing the movies ?, through wifi ? , to what device ?

200mbps doesn’t affect the speeds from the LAN , thats the maximum possible incoming speed from the internet.

Are there a lot of people using the MyCloud ? at the same time?

hi there

its connected via ethernet through the router/moden (use virgin media superhub)

im clicking on the movie within one of the folders on the NAS and then letting it load up onto my laptop using VLC

only i use the could at the moment

Try to download a file from the NAS to your laptop - and check the download speed.
Would be my very first measure to exclude the issue in this…

When you say ‘load up’, are you copying the file to your computer, or getting VLC to play (stream) the file direct from the NAS?

How is your laptop connected to the router? wired ethernet? what link rate: 100Mbit? Gigabit? wifi? what sort of wifi: b, g, n, ac? How close is the latop to the router (if using wifi)?

If you have just got the device, and have loaded a lot of media onto it, it may still be busy thumbnailing and indexing the media.

To do a data transfer speed test, use a tool such as Crystal Disk Mark. With a gigabit ethernet connection, you ought to get about 80MB/s read and 40MB/s write speeds, for large files.

hi there, best to just answer like this

STREAM DIRECTLY FROM NAS

How is your laptop connected to the router? wired ethernet? what link rate: 100Mbit? Gigabit? wifi? what sort of wifi: b, g, n, ac? How close is the latop to the router (if using wifi)?

WIRELESS, IS LINK RATE THE USUAL DOWNLOAD SPEED AND IF NOT, WHAT DO I DO TO FIND THIS OUT? DONT KNOW WHAT TYPE OF WIFI - JUST KNOW AS VIRGIN MEDIA, ROUTER IS DOWNSTAIRS DIRECTLY BELOW OFFICE

I JUST WANT TO STREAM FROM THE NAS EACH TIME SO THAT FAMILY CAN ALSO USE THE NAS TO WATCH ANY FILMS AND THEN WE CAN STORE THE OLD DVDS AWAY. IS THIS SOMETHING WD CAN DO OR SHOULD I JUST RETURN?

But you should CHECK and measure your download speed by downloading for example one video file!
This is the sense behind this proposals! You are looking for the failures, so you have to do different checks to exclude possible failure reasons step by step…

You seem to be getting frustrated that we’re not fixing your problem. We’re doing our best, but we need information about what you’re trying to do, and how. If we’re seemingly being pedantic, it’s because we can only give accurate advice if we know exactly what if going on. Remote diagnosis isn’t easy.

The wifi link between your laptop and your router will be determined by the capabilities of both ends. If your router is fairly new, it ought be be wifi-n or even wifi-ac. These are modern, and fairly fast. older wifi-b or wifi-g are slower. If your laptop is old, it may only have the slower wifi. This might limit the available speed. You should be able to find out what wifi connection you have, either by reading the spec/manual for your laptop, or clicking the little wifi icon on the bottom right of the task bar. This should show you the properties of the connection. The greater the distance between laptop and router, the weaker the signal, and the lower the link rate it will be able to achieve. Try taking the laptop close to the router.

The MyCloud can stream videos and music, yes, Either connecting as a file server, or as a media server. I use both methods, but usually use Kodi to stream videos from the file server running on the NAS. My suggestion of trying to investigate the access speeds was to run some diagnostic tests on your system, to establish if there’s some obvious network problem. That’s how you solve problems like this; by running diagnostic tests, interpreting the results, and trying to fix problems you find.

If you don’t feel able to, or don’t want to spend the effort finding out how the MyCloud works (and the capabilities of your laptop and router), then, by all means, take it back. Like most people here, trying to help, I don’t work for WD, so I don’t care what you choose to do.

first off, wow, i am shocked by your tone. not once did i show frustration and never felt it, i simply asked where do i find this information. if you think speaking in caps to distinguish who is talking is somehow frustration then i think you have minsundertood what i was trying to achieve. I do however find condescending tones, very inappropriate

  1. i have a brand new laptop by lenovo
  2. i have a new superhub by virginmedia
  3. Also, i uploaded these files 3 days ago, why would it still be doing this? Is there a better way to access these files, i am just doing it through my computer and then clicking on networks etc.How do i get the system to index the media?
  4. i downloaded crystal disk mark but dont know how you work it

i know you may not care now however i would appreciate if anyone can help in establishing what the error may be and what remedies i can do to fix it which dont resort to having to go closer to the router

You want help from us. We try to give you support. We proposed several measures to do the first steps to figure out your problem.
And what are you doing? You don’ care about our advices, you are doubting and arguing about every measure we propose. You do not even try to understand the sense of our proposals and what we intend to do…

Under these circumstances, sorry, I’m out here from now…

dear Walter, i havent responded to you once, therefore i have not argued or doubted you.Unfortunately, you havent actually given any explicit advice which is why i havent responded.

My son uses VLC over wifi and it’s usually pretty quick , takes a short while to load the first block of the file , but he doesn’t have any issues.

Also try another software solution , say Mediamonkey

It could be a bottleneck in the network elsewhere…

Try copying a large movie file using copy/paste from the NAS to your laptop and see what speeds it shows on the dialog box.

as a reference , coping a 1 gig file here from the MyCloud to my wired PC gave me 75 meg a second.

thanks for this, this is great advice… i have actually just set up one of the folders as a new drive which seems to have made it quicker (i.e. set it up as my z drive)

would that have been the problem?

the issue is, i dontwant to ever download onto any of our devices, just stream from them, is media monkey he way to go about it?

Exactly this I have already proposed two times … but…

If you can see the NAS in your Windows networked devices list , then you shouldn’t have had any difference in speed viewing movies between going through the network or using a mapped drive.

Do you have a ‘smart’ TV by any chance that you can use to see if it can play the movies at a reasonable rate , I’m trying to see if it’s the Mycloud , DLNA , your laptops network settings, your Virginmedia hub or some other choke point that’s causing the slowdown.

if adding a mapped drive letter works for you then just do something similar to the other PCs you want to be able to access the files , clicking the movies through a mapped drive won’t download the files , it ‘should’ just play the files using the default player.

Just make sure your MyCloud has been set up with a static IP address to try and reduce possible issues later.

Sean, let me take a crack at this.
I presume you have a smartphone or tablet. If so, install the WD My Cloud mobile app on them. This will enable you to stream your movies to that device, Once setup you should be able to see your My Cloud device, the Public folder, and the mp4 movie files in it. Not all movie file formats will work, but any mp/m4v file will stream.

Can you do this and do it successfully?
