WD Drive Manager Services component error message MyBook Studio Edition II 2TB on iMac

For five months I have been using a WD MyBook Studio Edition II 2TB in RAID 1 mode on a 27" iMac i7, 2.93 GHz, running Mac OS X 10.6.7, as a Time Machine connected via FW800.  Initial installation and operation was all good.

Recently, the blue WD logo disappeared from the menu bar. I reinstalled the WD Drive Manager version 2.25 from the installation disk. The logo reappeared, however when selecting Launch WD RAID Manager from the menu an error message appears:

“The WD Drive Manager Services component could not be found. Make sure the Drive Services component is running first.”

I removed the WD Drive Manager with the installation disk and reinstalled and tried again. No good.

Tried again, this time using the USB connection with the same result. No joy.

Tried using the downloadable version (2.25) from WD with same results.

Searching Google lead to no hits on anything remotely related for a solution.

So, at this point, I cannot confirm that the drive is actually in RAID 1 mode. It shows up in the Finder as a 1TB drive with 268 GB used.

How can I restore a working version of the WD Drive Manager?

Thanks for any assistance or referral.

Hi there, I located a solution that could help. Try removing the current version of the software, reset the computer and then download and install the version from the link below.

I had tried that option earlier with the same resulting error message. I tried again and got the same. :frowning:

Thanks for trying.

The search continues.

same issue here…

hmmm… after reinstalling, i got the same error trying to open the manager from the applications folder.  but… i noticed a WD logo in my menu bar at the top of the screen.  i clicked it and it worked fine.  maybe it will work for you too.

No joy for me yet. I’ve sent a message to WD support and have been moved up to Level II support. Hopefully, a programmer type will be able to solve the problem.

My drive ‘seems’ to be working as my Time Machine backup but only shows up as a 1TB when I Get Info. I had originally set it up as a RAID 1 (mirroring) drive so I would also have backup on the second 1TB drive, but until I get the WD Drive Manager app working, I have no way of knowing if it works or not. …Frustrating…

After arranging a test to mount the drive on another iMac (after installing the software from the disk), it appeared the drive manager did load and open and functioned normally, indicating the drive was operating properly (both 1TB drives in the enclosure could be seen).

This suggested that the issue was software related so I reinstalled Mac OS X 10.6.4 from the install disk that shipped with the iMac and then allowed it to update itself to 10.6.8. Then I installed the WD Drive Manager from its install disk, mounted the drive and SUCCESS. The WD logo on the menu bar launched the Drive Manager with full functionality. Time Machine was able to pick up right where it left off and I now, once again, have a full RAID 1 mirrored backup.

Hopefully, if anyone else has this issue, the act of reinstalling the OS (which I was hesitant to do) will solve their problem as well.

Thank you for hanging in there and solving the issue.  I will pass this along for our staff to see.
