WDTV Live Component Video Problem

Hi - I am having a problem with trying to use the WDTV component output with my (CRT) TV, which supports component input.

I have run through all the component output options (resolutions and frequencies) available in the WDTV Live setup options, but all I can get is a mis-synced picture with a double image or no image at all.

The TV component input works perfectly with every other component device I have (DVD, digital set top box) … just not the WDTV Live. And I also tested with a second WDTV Live with the same problem occurring.

Any ideas??

Thanks

wow really? no one else has this problem? i cant believe no one has bothered to answer

Try with another TV, I have no problem with a HD Ready plasma TV at 1080i and 720p.

I’m using component because I do not have a spare HDMI input.

Try changing the colour space (4th menu on WD) from YUV to RGB or viceversa.

I am getting this issue too on an older JVC D-series projection television.  Composite gives a split screen (I think this is a frequency issue) and component doesn’t work at all.  When plugged up to a Gateway 30" monitor, both work.  Changing color space and frequency are no joy.

Any thoughts?

Sorry, should have said that component gives split screen and composite gives no output at all.

i had a similar issue and found that the only component cable that works is the short unusable cable that came in the box.  same goes with normal video audio cable.  The cables that I have which works fine for my other equipment doesn’t work for the WDTV Live.  Not sure why.

Use only the supplioed cables that came in the box - Make sure the connector end that plugs into the WD Live box is FULLY inserted in the hole and secured - You have to push it and it should snap itt tight.  Make sure the R G B end is plugged correctly into the respective connectors on the TV.  Sometimes people will confuse the RED connector on their TV (Audio-R) with and plug the component R to that…

You are using a CRT ?  If you are using NTSC set to 60Hz / 480p and PAL use 50Hz 576p.

Make sure your output is set to component.  Try turning off your WD Live and on again.

why wouldn’t i be able to use another component or standard audio/video cable.

the one supplied is too short.

my TV is a projector.  it’s probably YUV,  but I’ve tried both.

on a standard audio/video input (red/white audio, yellow video), only the supplied cable worked, not the standard off the shelf cable.

why is that?  i’ve ensured it’s snapped all the way in.

try combinations of the cables in the red / yellow /green inputs.

I have the same issue with my unit. WDTV Live (WDBAAN0000NBK-00)

Composite works fine.

I have a Samsung CRT and the component inputs work fine with the DVD but with the WD TV Live… I get a split screen (Vertical) with the same content on both sides.

I am using the original cables. I tried to route it thru the Denon AVR 3310 Receiver and it still has the same issue.

I have not updated the firmware till date specially because of the issues with the firmware that I read recently

I am bought this from Amazon in US, however I am in India now where PAL is the format… (I think)… anyways I can see that the colors are much better in the component but then it is a vertically split screen … and it does not help.

I tried the 50hz and 60 hz settings and it did not help.

This tv that I have now does not support progressive output. How do I select Interlaced Output in the WD.

The specifications say it supports it but then I dont see the option when I select Component Output. maybe we need it to be added to the new firmware.

I have now confirmed that it is a progressive and interlaced format issue . I changed my dvd players mode to progressive and the same issue started.

I know that the WDTV player should output interlaced format too… but I dont see the option. How do I enable it.

I have the same problem.

I have an old philips flat plasma tv of 2001.

I used in the past a packard bell store & play 3500 mediaplayer without any problem with this tv through the component connection.

I don’t understand why now it doesn’t work with wd tv live. The screen is always black on all resolution and colors. If I try to remove and insert the little jack,  sometimes the image came with a poor quality in black and white.

With composite (PAL in italy) works fine.

i just went and bought an LCD

it looks a million times better with HDMI

all i can say is WOW!

go hdmi if you have the choice

i guess i went around the problem

Hi ReachMichael

Once you select Component the different resolutions come up, start with 480i and maybe change colour space.

you can do this from composite with both leads connected.

Auto-sensing would be a great feature

I tried your method, but without success.

I connected both composite and component to different plugs in the tv.

From composite entry I switched through all the different resolution (from 480i to 720 and 1080i) and colour spaces (YUV and RGB). After each change I swtiched the tv to the composite entry , but always no image.

I’m quite sure that my philips flat tv 42 fd944 uses YUW ( Y Pbr Pcr) colour for component but i tried RGB  too without success.

My old hd mediaplayer used the following component resolutions:

  • HDTV Component 480p
  • HDTV Component 720p
  • HDTV Component 1080i

Since the wd tv live has 480 interlaced and not progressive in the menù i’m sure this is the problem.

A firmware update maybe can add this option 480i .

As a workaround In my tv there is a VGA entry and a scart RGB entry.  Maybe it is possible to use a cable to convert the component to VGA RGB or SCART RGB.

Hi Keithb

I would do that , however my wdtv live does not give me any options other than progressive… so only “p” and no “i”

I wonder if they meant that the unit will support 480i by using composite connection only…

At the present the WDTV Live only supports 480i using composite output only.

480i is the standard format for NTSC (480 lines picture inormation, interlaced)

I have the same issue. I do not get anything when using component (1080i).  This is ridiculous.

I just connected to a 12 inch tv using composite and that seemed to work.  On my HD TV, I have had no luck using the 2 foot cables that came with WDTV Live.

Having the 408i over Component isa absolute must. WD must provide this as soon as possible. They claim it supports this in the manual whereas in reality it does not. I get a Vertically Split screen when I try to use it with my TV.
