Western Digital 2TB SATA III backwards compatibility

Hi there.

I am about to purchase the Western Digital 2TB SATA III hard drive however the server mainboard I have in my home server has only got SATA I controller. I am currently running a 1 TB SATA II HDD there and it work’s however I’m concerned there might be compatibility issues between SATA III and SATA I.

Does anyone know whether SATA III is compatible with SATA I?

The HDD I want to buy is  here.

Thanks

Hi no sata 3 wont go to sata 1 only sata 2

Yup, SATA 3 can only go down to SATA 2 and SATA 2 to SATA 1. You can compare diferent models following this link.

Okay, thanks for your answers.

So the HDD I wanna buy is the WD20EARX version which is the SATA III one (thanks Amazon reviews). I have found a SATA II version which is the older WD20EARS model and according the website it’s SATA II.

Here’s the link: here.

Some people on Amazon mentioned that the older model has 3 platters whilst the new one has 4. That might be why the older model is more expensive (£15+) than it’s replacement. Am I right?

Also, someone said these suffer the ‘Load Cycle Count problem’, do you know if that applies to all Green series hard drives or just the particular model?

Thanks.
