This is my first post so please excuse me if i ask stupid questions! I’m new to using a box to do what my very old laptop has previously done. I will now say I’m only looking to change my current setup as my laptop can’t cope with displaying 1080p onto my TV through RGB and has no HDMI out.
It looks to me that both of these products can stream media from my PC but I have read some comments on this forum that make me doubt this. Can someone point me in the right direction please?
My main priority is being able to stream media files in 1080p from my desktop upstairs via my WiFi network to the TV in the living room downstairs. I know my WiFi network can handle the transfer rate and my laptop currently get excellent signal and connection speed next to the TV downstairs. I’m not fussed about having Netflix and other stuff like that, however if it were to come with BBC i player or ITV player this would be a bonus.
Would these be good products or should I be looking at something else?
The Play is the latest but can only access media servers on the network and is unable to play mpeg2 files which rules out streaming DVD files / images.
Can someone point me in the right direction please?
Absolutely. The SMP is a “serious” media player you can get to do what you want it to. The Play is a scaled-down player built to meet a low price point. Many Play owners have expressed their disappointment here in purchasing a Play, as they find that although it is the “newest” player in the line, it is not the top-of-the line unit – it is the bottom. The SMP is feature-rich.
I also suggest you get a hard drive to attach to the SMP right away, because it all works better when an attached drive is accessed versus a networked drive. Plus, no PC needs to be on to use your media on the WD.
And, ignore the comments from trolls living under bridges who crawl out to comment here.
