Hello everyone, new user here but long time WD customer and happy until now (finger crossed). I’m looking to upgrade my system (ASUS P5K PRO SATA2 motherboard) from 2x WD black series 500GB to 2x black series 1TB hard drives. The concern I have is that I’ve read about some disappointing issues regarding the higher noise produced by the latest 1TB Black SATA3 if compared with the previous version, has anyone experienced the same problem? Alternatively I could go with a Velociraptor even thought I already know it makes some noise. Or should I wait for new releases that will address the problem if any? Thanks in advance.
I have a friend that has a Caviar Black, he bought it last month, haven’t noticed any loud noises.
Thanks for that. By reading the specifications from the pdf file it seem that both SATA 2 and 3 drives make the same noise so I guess the first people who bought the latest version were unlucky but I still worry I could get a faulty drive then it would cost more to send it back. But there is another issue regarding this latest drive when configuring 2 or more in a RAID system so Western Digital do not endorse also they discourage it (it’s very hard to find the fine print). Should I go with the enterprise series?
Haven’t seen one of the enterprise HDD working.
Hi yes if you are going to run hardware raid you need the enterprise drives as they support TLR . As for noise I suppose if your one of the people that dont put your pc where its supposed to go under your desk and having it sitting right by your ear you may hear noise. I run 2 sata 3 600 gig raptors my pc sits under the desk I cant hear them at all.
Thanks for suggestion. However, it’s a pity thing I’ve to go with an enterprise edition drive (and spend 50% $$ more) to run a gaming computer. Another issue is that they are not available to the shops of my choice, as you can guess they yet have the caviar black and the enterprise version of Seagate etc. etc. I think that WD has lost ground with this last upgrade, the most disappointing thing is that they downgraded previous drive’s capabilities (very basic RAID capabilities!) and not clearly telling its customers. I was able to find this problem thanks to other ex WD customers who regretted buying these drives. I’ll have to go with Seagate or Hitachi due to shop stock availability also I’ll save money too. WD really lost ground on this, what a pity thing.
