Is the Media Library functionality limited to attached USB sources only? All of my media are stored on a network share. The media library never scans this content, so I’m not getting any of the coverart and metadata.
As a test, I copied a few movies to a USB drive, and when I plugged it in, scanning immediately commenced. Considering that this isn’t a WDTV Hub product and has no built-in storage, seems reasonable that a lot of folks are going to access media from network shares. I can access and play this content, but as best I can tell, it’s not possible to download movie metadata unless you’re using an attached USB drive.
Furthermore, the dashboard is unavailable unless you have a USB drive attached. I get “Dashboard Unavailable - To access the dashboard, please connect to a content source with media library enabled”. So, no adding favorites for content unless you have a USB drive plugged in.
Yes, it appears Media Library is functional only for USB disks.
And since the Dashboard depends on the Library, it won’t be available unless there’s a media library to access, which means you have to have a USB disk installed for that, too.
And then, even if you do, the NAS portions won’t be available.
My Media Library
The benefit of selecting this option is that it shows all the aggregated content on
your network attached storage and USB storage together in one view. However, it
does take longer to scan all the storage content compared to selecting a more
specific option for content retrieval.
It also said that all network shares/remote drives had to be write enabled for the media library to work. Many remote shares are only read enabled by default. Page 53:
Media Library Compilation
Media Library Compilation refers to the process of scanning and consolidating the
media contents of the media player, network attached storage, or an attached USB
device into one comprehensive database so that you can easily browse and locate
media files based on certain metadata information (e.g., video files are categorized
based on title or release date).

Media Library Compilation Exemptions
The following conditions will prevent the media library compilation process.
I agree, as I am having the same issue and my shares are not write protected. Kinda dissapointed as it makes it alot harder for my kids to navigate content as I have several NAS devices on my network.
And here i thought it was just me. **bleep** i hope this gets fixed - alternative is to go to CFW, which while I have experience with such, is always the last resort for a brand new piece of tech.
Argh, im having this same issue. I bought this thing to get away from the crappy performance of Windows Media Center wireless preformance, and it seems this thing is neutered as well.
Having the same issue with my new WD Live box that comes with wifi and my QNAP TS-210
Connecting via NFS or SAMBA with a user that has full RW access still gives me the error “To access the dashboard, please connect to a content source with media library enabled” when trying to add something to the dashboard.
running the latest firmware version as of the date of this post
Same problem here. I purchased this new one for the media library that I find will not work with my NAS. I am looking for a proper media player that can media scrape my NAS. I plan on taking this thing back by the weekend if I can’t find a solution.
There is no older firmware. The firmware that shipped with the device and the first update both have it removed. We need to wait for the second update to come out. The only alternative to waiting I can think of is to use a USB device.
How can we put pressure on WD to get this fixed ASAP? This is a major selling feature of the new WDTV (and the reason I traded in my Live). They did call it the “Streaming Media Player” after all.
