My Cloud - 2nd Laptop

As a greenhorn with My Cloud it’s probable I’m missing something here.  My PC (ethernet cable to router) displays Smartware correctly and runs OK.  A wifi connected laptop with its Smartware loaded does not display WD My Cloud.  Any suggestions welcome.

Just noticed that WDMyCloud, as a Backup Target, does appear from time to time (eg. if I reset the device ) and then disappear again?  I have a strong wifi signal.  Driving me nuts:smileyfrustrated :frowning:

It’s most likely your network speed - I had this with mine using my old router. PC’s connected by LAN cable and some laptops by wifi would show my MCM, but others would not (or would show it but most of the dashboard options were missing).

As a test, try plugging one of the problem laptops directly into the MCM (connect the two via the LAN cable into the ethernet port on the laptop) and see if the MCM shows up correctly then. If it does then I would suspect either your network speed or something between the two is blocking it (a firewall or similar).

What make, model and speed of router do you have, and also what speed do you achieve on the wifi between your laptop and the router?

Thanks Darren.  It’s a new Technicolor TG582n supplied by Demon. Connecting the MC to the router with a cable and it works fine! I had already disabled Defender (I have Avast as my security).  The speed on speedtest of the laptop using wifi is 18 mbps UP and 0.75 DOWN.   This does seem to be where my problem lies, but obviously it isn’t an ongoing option to have a cable connection  :confounded:

* DOWN 18.95

   UP 0.75

Firstly is it a MyCloud or a MyCloud Mirror? If it’s the former then you’ve posted this in the wrong forum, but we’ll see what we can do anyway.

Anyway so just to confirm, your NAS box is connected to the router by its ethernet cable, and your PC (which is also cable connected) works fine with it, but your laptop (which connects to the router by wifi) doesn’t show it in Smartware. If you connect the NAS directly to the laptop’s ethernet port, then it works.

So if the above is correct, then the next step is to connect the laptop by cable to the router, with the NAS box also connected to the router via another cable. If that still works then there’s nothing wrong with the basic set-up of the laptop, so it must be either something wrong specific to the wifi firewall setup or there’s an issue with the network traffic on the wifi side.

I just want to be clear as your comment “Connecting the MC to the router with a cable and it works fine!” is a bit confusing as the MyCloud (mirror or not) should be connected that way, with the USB port just for further expansions to it and for transfer and from the device directly.

Oops sorry I have a MyCloud.

OK, so it does sound like possibly the speed of your wifi connection between the laptop and the router (as a first suspect anyway). Going via a cable is almost always quicker, hence why things show up. Your router itself is nice and new and fast, so it may be at the laptop end.

If you look at the status of your wifi link (if you’re under windows) it should show you the connection speed - right click on the wifi icon in the taskbar and select status. The router itself is fine and fast, but if the wifi on the laptop end is slower then it could be the issue.

Darren, many thanks for your help.  I think you have shown me where the weak link is, so I can now focus on that.
