I have seen similar problems but nothing that quite matches mine!
I am unable to play any MKV files & when I try I have to then reset the box as I am unable to play any files at all.
I have seen a similar problem where the problem was down to Paragon NTFS s/ware but I am using Tuxera, are there any known problems with that?

You either need to upgrade the firmware on the WDTV to a version that supports compression in the headers of Matroska files, or you need to re-mux the files with compression turned off for both the audio and video track headers.

Another thing you can do is verify if the all the codecs on your file are compatible with the media player, please check the media info on the files you can’t play and compare the codecs with this list.-
Download, install and run your files through mediainfio- http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en

That did no good at all! Updated the firmware but still no change.
I have now copied a file that worked on my fat32 h/d to my ntfs h/d & it also plays so it’s not all mkv files!

That would be correct. Filesystem should have little relevance to whether a file will or will not play.
As requested post the mediainfo for one of the files that does not work. Would also help if you post the mediainfo for a file that does work. Not much further assistance can be provided until you do this.
Ok, but I thought maybe the s/ware involved in putting them on there from my mac may affect it but anyway

I take ‘As if I would! :-)’ to be yes it is illegal.
Then choose another mkv that is legal, i.e. you encoded from the source DVD and does not play. Then post the mediainfo.
PS. Suggest you read the Terms of Service for this forum concerning illegal content.

Well, no wonder everyone is confused. You’re in the wrong forum.
You posted in the LIVE / LIVEPLUS forum, and you have an old WDTVHD GEN1.
Your MKV files contain HEADER STRIPPING. The older WDTVHD’s do NOT support that!
You will have to remux the file to remove the header stripping.
But the question still remains- Did you rip this MKV from a DVD that you own?

Yes, because the features and playback capabilities are different on the different versions of the devices.
As to the second one, the audio is DTS. The Gen1 never supported DTS.
