I need two file sharing devices that stay identical, in case one unit fails. A mirror (RAID 1) unit won’t work, due to possibility of enclosure failing while I’m using in the field. I have a team of about 15 users and need the file sharing devise to back up to the second file sharing devise at least every 10 minutes. They also have to fit in my carry on luggage. #1) Will a MyCloud unit back up to a second MyCloud unit every 10 minutes or less? #2) is the data readable by a computer or written in a proprietary format — if a drive fails, could I pull the drive and put in any enclosure and read the data or would the drive have to be read by another MyCloud unit? Thank you.
Officially the single bay second generation My Cloud cannot backup to another single bay second generation My Cloud. The following WD Knowledgebase article details which units can backup to other units.
Thanks. I assume that I could maintain a duplicate of the 1st MyCloud drive by using backup software on my PC, but may feel it while working on my PC and not optimal to have to rely on the PC as go-between.
“remote backup” seems to be a bit unclear to me. Does remote mean any MyCloud unit that’s connected to the same LAN via the ethernet port OR USB port?
Documentation says single-bay MyCloud can not create a remote backup to another MyCloud. But I believe the single-bay MyCloud can create a backup via SafePoint feature to an external drive via the USB 3.0 port.
So, is it the case that a second MyCloud unit can’t be connected to the first via USB 3.0, because the MyCloud units are not able to use the USB 3.0 port for data input — only output?
You can backup a My Cloud device to a USB hard drive attached to the USB port on the My Cloud. You can use third party software to backup the contents of a local network My Cloud to computer or hard drive attached to a computer. For example I use Free File Sync (http://freefilesync.org/) on a computer to mirror several My Cloud Shares to a USB hard drive attached to that same computer on the local network.
What you cannot do (officially) is have a v2.x single bay My Cloud backup (using the My Cloud Dashboard Backup feature) to another v2.x single bay My Cloud.
There are a number of discussions on using CRON to schedule copying of My Cloud files/Share to another location or to a USB hard drive attached to the My Cloud. One can use the forum search feature (magnifying glass icon upper right) to find those discussions.
