I have had my HUB for a couple of days now and aside from Windows 7 file sharing issues, am very pleased.
One shortcoming (in my opinion) is that of the media organization. I have TV shows and Movies on external USB drives. I would like to make use of the Media Library functionality and not have to browse folders for content. When I view by “all content”, the TV episodes are listed with no artwork/covers and you have to scroll through all (for example; Big Bang Theory episodes) to get to a movie - “Big Daddy”.
My work around would appear to be having a separate drive for Movies, one for TV and viewing by folders, so that I can browse by Movie or TV.
A way to aggregate media types would be awesome, such as that of Media Browser for the PC. Select a folder and identify as Movie or TV Show and have those categories show up for selection.
I do indeed use the folder view of the Hub to navigate my collection. However, the Hub (IMHO) does a poor job of user-friendly navigation of Movies/TV on multiple drives.
My collection is currently on two drives, shared with my HTPC running MediaBrowser and therefore organized in folders per MediaBrowser. Yes - I understand that the Hub is NOT MEdiaBrowser, but several other aggregators use a similar folder structure containing metadata.
So, in folder view, I have to go to MEDIA Drive>Movies>Movie Name>Media file to play a movie. If I want to watch a TV show when that completes, I have to back out to the drive selection…MEDIA Drive 2>TV Shows>Series Name>Season>Episode to watch. Quite a bit of clicking.
Don’t even try to go to the ALL Video view if your collection contains TV Shows…
Folders are an easy solution for even the slightly technical, but for the “average consumer” a GUI is a must. As well, the “cool new media player” look and feel is awesome when showing off your Home Theater…again, hard to impress an average user navigating through folders.
To appeal to more consumers (less technical) a good way to organize your collection is s must - similar to MediaBrowser, Plex, Boxee and etc. Not to mention the ability to use your own collected metadata instead fo the rudimentary way that the Hub collects it for you.
The Hub could very well take the place as the main player in my HomeTheater if the interface and organization were better.
With that said, however - I am very pleased with the functionality of the Hub and it has tremendous potential…
